Our breath as a regulator: finding balance through breathwork

…..the inspiration behind MyHappyRetreats (MHR)

Over many years of working with Transformational Breath®—both with clients and, perhaps more profoundly, within myself—I’ve come to understand that our breath is, before anything else, a regulator. It’s a balancer. Whatever feels out of alignment, the breath naturally guides us back to equilibrium. It grounds us, encourages us to turn inward, and allows us to let go of external distractions that distort our true perception.

The body as a constant regulator
Our bodies are built to regulate. The autonomic nervous system works tirelessly to maintain homeostasis, balancing the sympathetic nervous system (responsible for action and alertness) and the parasympathetic nervous system (which promotes rest and relaxation). This delicate interplay keeps us functional and healthy.

Beyond the breath, our bodies possess multiple systems that act as regulators:

  • Temperature regulation keeps our internal environment stable despite external conditions.
  • Hormonal balance adjusts bodily functions like growth, metabolism, and stress response.
  • Blood sugar levels are carefully controlled to provide consistent energy.

When this regulation is disrupted, we face significant consequences. For example, burnout is the body’s way of enforcing a shutdown when we’ve ignored signs of overload, sacrificing homeostasis in the process. The body demands rest to recalibrate and recover.

From personal practice to MyHappyRetreats (MHR)
My deep dive into breathwork—through private sessions, intensive retreats, and corporate mindfulness workshops—led me, two years ago, to create MyHappyRetreats (MHR).

MHR was born from a simple idea: to offer holiday retreats that blend mindful, healthy exercises with authentic relaxation. Our modern lives are filled with stress, deadlines, and constant stimulation, making it difficult to truly unwind. My goal was to create exclusive experiences where people can quickly find their balance, recharge, and still enjoy the essence of a real holiday.

Redefining relaxation
Many people struggle to enjoy their holidays fully. They fall ill as soon as they stop working, their bodies finally surrendering after prolonged stress. This is because relaxation isn’t always as simple as lying on a beach or lounging on the couch. True relaxation can be active or passive, depending on what the body and mind need.

Passive relaxation—like sunbathing—might not be enough to restore your energy reserves. Conversely, incorporating mindful practices like breathwork, meditation, or light movement can create a more profound, lasting recharge.

However, not everyone feels inclined to dedicate an entire vacation to intensive wellness practices. That’s why MHR retreats strike a balance between mindful activities and authentic, unforgettable travel experiences.

Final thoughts
At MyHappyRetreats, we believe in the power of balance between mind and body, between work and rest, between action and stillness. Our breath is the key to finding that balance, and our retreats offer the perfect opportunity to reconnect with yourself while experiencing the beauty of the world.

Whether you’re looking for deep transformation or simply a refreshing escape, MHR provides an unforgettable journey back to your center.

Our retreat destinations

Cuba, Havana – dance & connect
Havana is a city like no other—mystical, vibrant, and rich with history. After over 30 years of visiting Cuba, we know the ins and outs of experiencing it authentically, as the locals do.

Senegal, Abéné – back to the roots
In the rural village of Abéné, time slows down. Here, people exemplify living in the present; the concept of “tomorrow” holds little weight. It’s a powerful reminder that stress often lives in the future.

Spain, Formentera – breathwork & nutrition
Formentera, a charming island next to Ibiza, offers crystal-clear turquoise waters and a relaxed Mediterranean vibe. We rent a beautiful house overlooking the sea, where mornings begin with meditation, gentle exercises, nutritional advice, and breathwork sessions.

Switzerland, Kiental – intensive breathwork & coaching
Nestled in the Bernese Alps, our Kiental retreat is a deep dive into transformational breathwork. This intensive four-day retreat is designed for those who want to work on their visions and goals, develop a positive mindset, and harness the power of their breath for lasting change.
